Land Acknowledgment

The Signature Theatre is situated on unceded traditional lands of the Munsee Lenape, the Canarsee, the Wequaesgeek and the Siwanoy. Our territory currently known as New York City originates from the indigenous population that once inhabited the area of Manahatta and it's collective five boroughs within Turtle Island.

To the region of Lower Manahatta we are indebted to the Canarsee whose Chief Seyseys, met with the Dutch. To the region of Upper Manahatta we give reverence to the Wequaesgeek, whose territory encompassed the Bronx and whose Chief Meijeterma, met with Jonas Bronck.

Let this our Land Acknowledgement be the beginning of our return to unity, not just of each other but to the awareness that we are truly a part of the earth. Let us now walk with the knowledge that each and every one of us is a guardian of most importance, as we were put upon this Turtle Island not to seek dominion but as Caretakers, as Two leggeds, to protect and to grow each other, to love and offer kindness. We are here to ensure that the gifts of earth, water and air remain pure and whole, and so let us be guardians of the earth. the water, and the air, the 4 legged, fliers, the swimmers, the crawlers, the mammal people and the green. In this way we honor the land which gives us life, we honor the lives & culture forsaken, and we honor the prospect of renewed alliances.

Moreover, let this moment of recognition be a monument of action. Action that is fortified with a cooperative spirit and reverence for our traditional ways. Let it be the beginning of hope for this our Turtle Island in the land of the Munsee.

Let us now stand lifting our humanity, enrapturing with the earth's conscious as guardians of harmony and kindness, as we pay respect to all of our ancestors and to future generations.

We are the Lenapehoking today, and will be for the remaining days of tomorrows...*Keepers of the Pass.

*This acknowledgement demonstrates our ongoing commitment as a community working to dismantle the continued legacies of colonialism, oppression and systematic racism. We offer a pledge of Social Justice awakening, and education in order to raise the level of awareness, and to ultimately strengthen the communal fabric which includes outreach with our Indigenous neighbors. In this way, our collective voices can disrupt the patterns of social injustice through reverence of the Native People who share their land and by revitalizing Indigenous history through Indigenous specific programming.

“The Multiplicity of our Desires”

We have a desire for a theater that can sustain the complexity and the multiplicity of our desires.
Water for me conjures healing and stillness.

calm, healing, thirst

unbolted, spectacular, and free

I want to see humanity and artists understood as human beings.
Acknowledge that we need time to rest and time to create in a human manner.
I want to see and feel community.

I want to return to creative spaces WITH A GROOVE IN MY STEP & A MELODY IN MY SMILE

I want to say goodbye to the apologies I know that make me yummy and legible, smallish to swallow
and in its place I reveal myself as the raging magnificence that I am—in all my divine unknown, I trust.

theaters need to practice what their artists preach.

Less talking. More listening.

I want the art we make to be aspirational, to transcend what already exists and reflect a world that may only be possible in the space of our imaginations.

I want to say goodbye to the product over process mentality.

What is something you want to say goodbye to in the performing arts world? Time as a construct of artistic capitalism

I want absented voices made visible.

I want more working together towards bigger things.

We want a theater that can sustain the complexity and the expansiveness of our imagination.

Ebb & Flow

Lyrics:
weight of the water just holding me down
bury me under and can’t reach my crown

waiting room hold
nowhere to go
lather rinse repeat
shutdown siloed retreat

i tried to remain so strong
i could not keep it on
we had nowhere to go
all things stop and nothing flows

you me us we
you me us we
you me us we
you me us we

we just want to celebrate
cause everything could be so great
we just want to celebrate
cause everything might be that great

Wings and Rings

I was staying in a hotel
for a few weeks,
for work.
They put me in the giant
disability suite.
I didn’t know such a thing
existed,
a disability suite.
And on the roof,
there was a pool.
I sat by the pool to relax.
But I didn’t go in
by myself.
I waited until one afternoon—
one afternoon out of three weeks—
when a friend came by to swim with me.
I didn’t need him.
I know I didn’t.
I could have gone swimming
every day,
in and out
on my own.
He was just
peace of mind.
I avoided the deep end,
moved back and forth
along the short distance of the pool.
Little half laps.
Push off the floor
push off the wall
and go.
Stroke
Kick
Stroke
Kick
Stroke
Kick
Keep your eyes closed.
Keep your mouth
closed.
Don’t let water in.
Let air out
a little at a time.
Toward the end
as breath runs out
it gets harder.
I can make it.
A little more.
Reach
reach
reach
until you
feel the wall
with your hand.
Hold it.
Pull up.
Rest.
Breath.
And then
start over.
Go back again
to the other side.
Repeat until
you’re tired.

This Room is a Broken Heart

The Window

I opened the window
The air came in
I whispered you stories
And the curtain did sing:

You are the safest here with me
We’ll hold hands and kiss
Under this tree
The water is laughing~
So laugh with me

Pleasure is soft
And pleasure is kind
Pleasure is soft
And pleasure is kind

I opened the window
So we can step through
Don’t be afraid now,
You’re right behind you

No need to hide that we are grieving
Time is a river
We wash the wounds
The water is singing~
So sing with me

Pleasure is soft
And pleasure is kind
Pleasure is soft
And pleasure is kind

Lilies blossom
Take your shoes off
Dip in fire
Let me roam
Ships are sailing
Sky is bleeding
Find the easy
Let’s go home

Pleasure is soft and pleasure is kind
Pleasure is soft and pleasure is kind
Pleasure is soft and pleasure is kind
Pleasure is soft and pleasure is kind
