Catch up with Signature's Past Playwrights-in-Residence

This past season featured premieres from Lee Blessing (1992-1993) with Great Falls at the Actors Theatre of Louisville's Humana Festival of New American Plays; Edward Albee's (1993-1994) Me, Myself and I at Princeton's McCarter Theatre; Horton Foote's (1994-1995) Dividing the Estate at Primary Stages, with an anticipated move to Broadway in Fall 2008; Adrienne Kennedy's (1995-1996) collaboration with son Adam P. Kennedy on Mom, How Did You Meet the Beatles? at The Public Theater's Public Lab series; Bill Irwin's (2003-2004) The Happiness Lecture at the Philadelphia Theatre Company; and Charles Mee's (2007-2008) Fire Island with 3-Legged Dog and Cardenio, co-written with Stephen Greenblatt, at Boston's American Repertory Theatre.

Tributes were paid to Foote at Chicago's Goodman Theatre, with productions of several of his plays, including The Trip to Bountiful, directed by Harris Yulin, featuring Signature alum from our award-winning 2005 production; Arthur Miller (1997-1998) with productions, readings, screenings, and lectures of his work at Washington D.C.'s Arena Stage; and August Wilson (2006-2007) whose work was commemorated with August Wilson's 20th Century, a series of workshop presentations of the complete Century Cycle at Washington D.C.'s Kennedy Center. Blessing, Sam Shepard (1996-1997), and Paula Vogel (2004-2005) have upcoming premieres: A Body of Water at Primary Stages (New York Premiere), Kicking a Dead Horse at The Public Theater, and A Civil War Christmas at New Haven's Long Wharf Theatre, respectively. Romulus Linney (1991-1992) is collaborating with composer Scott Wheeler for the Metropolitan Opera/Lincoln Center Theater Opera/Theater Commissions Program.

Revisits to previous work also highlighted this past season: Albee's Peter and Jerry at Second Stage Theatre and The American Dream and The Sandbox at the Cherry Lane Theatre, Kennedy's Ohio State Murders at Theatre for a New Audience, and upcoming productions of John Guare's (1998-1999) The House of Blue Leaves at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, Maria Irene Fornes' (1999-2000) Promenade in New York Theatre Workshop's new concert series, and Lanford Wilson's (2002-2003) Talley's Folly at the McCarter Theatre.
